Deck Materials

Heavy-duty, beautiful materials for
a deck that outdoorsy-types love.

What’s summertime in Kentucky or Tennessee without a deck for lounging and entertaining? Sweet tea, baked beans, and fried chicken–that’s the spirit! Whether you’re a homeowner looking to create an outdoor room or a contractor bringing to life your customer’s vision, find the materials and advice you want right here at Golden Rule Building Supply. Deck lumber, railing systems, risers, and more—in-stock or easy to order.

Deck Lumber

We stock two main types of decking lumber: 5/4 pressure-treated SYP lumber and Trex composite materials. You’ll also find the matching fascia, risers, and trim boards to go with the lumber you choose.

For pressure-treated decks, we also carry pressure-treated joists, beams, and posts.

Deck Railing Systems & Hardware

Safety, privacy, and a finished look are all great reasons for including a railing system on your backyard deck.

Looking for a one-stop shop for your deck project? We do not stock railing systems, but we’ll help you order in whatever you choose.

Railing systems come in many types of materials and aesthetics: wood, composite, vinyl, or aluminum. Talk to one of our friendly service staff if you need advice or input.

Deck Fasteners & Hardware

If you’re installing a composite deck, we highly recommend using a hidden fastener system. They’re easy to install and create a neat, classy aesthetic. Plus, you don’t have to worry about moisture seeping into screw holes or boards cracking around the screws.

We also sell traditional deck hardware such as face and structural screws, nails (hot dipped galvanized or stainless), joist hangers, post bases, corner brackets, beam connectors, etc. Galvanized, stainless steel, or epoxy-coated fasteners are solid options for humid climates.

Composite vs. Wood: Which Is Right for Me?

Struggling to know which deck material will serve you best in the long run? Here are a few pros and cons of both wood and composite to take into account:

Pressure-Treated Wood Pros

  • Tends to be most economical and efficient
  • Weather and insect resistant
  • Has that beautiful, natural look
  • Great stability in long board lengths
  • Easy to paint or stain
  • Easier for DIY-ers to install

Composite Pros

  • Mimics a wood look without the maintenance
  • Sleek, smooth look because of hidden fasteners
  • Requires no sanding, staining, or painting
  • Can be cost effective in the long-term
  • A good-quality composite, such as Trex, has a 25-50-year residential lifespan, depending on location and usage

Pressure-Treated Wood Cons

  • Maintenance
  • Cracking and warping over time
  • Fading from exposure to sunlight
  • Chemical release when cut or burnt

Composite Cons

  • More upfront costs
  • Less accessible for DIYer installation
  • Shorter joist spans; requires more supports
  • Darker colored Trex composite may maintain a lot of heat in areas of direct sunlight
